Bank Place

Running between Little Collins and Collins streets, Bank Place forms a secluded pedestrian precinct boasting a cluster of historic buildings from the 19th (Mitre Tavern, Savage Club) and early 20th centuries (Charter House, Bank House). Looking towards Little Collins Street, Normanby Chambers on the other side of Little Collins Street provides a northern bookend to the Place. The Bank of Australasia's earlier premises ran along Collins Street West, from the western side of the block to Bank Place. With other financial institutions such as the Bank of New Zealand and the ANZ (former ES&A) Bank in the vicinity, the Place's name reflects its location at Melbourne's traditional commercial and banking core. By the 1930s the area had become a specialist precinct of lawyers, merchants, brokers and accountants, and Bank Place continues to be a favourite lunchtime haunt of professionals from adjacent offices.
