Boneo

(3939, 65 km S, Mornington Peninsula Shire)

Boneo was originally part of one of the earliest pastoral runs taken up in 1838 on the Mornington Peninsula. William Thomas, Aboriginal Protector for the Westernport district, included the Aboriginal name Bornis for this locality on an 1841 map. It was the first district of the peninsula to be extensively cleared of its natural vegetation for agricultural purposes in the 1850s. Dairying and orchards became established rural industries in the 19th century, and the area remains a dispersed rural settlement featuring market gardens, pastures and hobby farms.
