Prahran Market

Established in 1864 on Greville Street and moved to Commercial Road in 1881, the Prahran Market developed as a thriving covered market with areas for meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, flowers and smallgoods. During the 1930s depression, it was used as a depot for distributing food and clothing to the unemployed. In the postwar era, the stall-holders and customers have reflected the cultural diversity and gentrification of the surrounding suburbs of Prahran, Windsor and South Yarra. The current building dates from 1891, although major redevelopment occurred in the 1970s following destruction of the fruit and vegetable section in 1950.
