As the war progressed, council employees increasingly volunteered for the front, and the first death of one of these men was reported. Due to the enlistments, growing numbers of temporary positions in council employ become available. As a result, hundreds of job applications were received and saved in the Town Clerk's correspondence files, many of which reveal details about the lives of the applicants. This included the way that their lives had been affected by the war, its impact on businesses and jobs, the men's reasons for not going to war, and the lives of family members affected by the conflict. The urban spaces of Melbourne were visibly militarised, with the marching of troops through the streets, the presence of military camps in the suburbs, recruitment centres set up around the city and posters calling for support for the war displayed on buildings and in shop windows. Public entertainments to raise funds for soldiers and war relief, notably for the Belgian Relief Fund, continue to appear frequently during 1915, as do letters that raise concerns about the lack of availability of supplies for council purposes, the disruption of supply lines and the continued concerns about trading with enemy aliens.
