Situated by Essendon Airport, and south-east of Tullamarine, Airport West became one of the main industrial areas in the City of Keilor during the 1960s. Foundries, engineering works and airport-related industries developed on sites ranging from small workshops to factories. Residential estates were built for young families attracted by employment and cheap housing.
