Antipodes Festival

This annual ethnic festival celebrating Greek culture and tradition is held in March and April. A weekend street party, the Lonsdale Street Glendi takes place in the Greek precinct as near as possible to 25 March, the Greek National Day. Under the auspices of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria, the festival was conceived by Don Dunstan, chairman of the Victorian Tourist Commission and former South Australian premier, and prominent members of the Greek community, replacing Greek Cultural Week in 1987. Encompassing the arts, craft, commerce, education and sport, the festival has featured since 1993 the Greek Film Festival.
