Archery

Archery featured as an entertainment by Port Phillip District publicans during the 1840s, and a number of archery clubs were formed the following decade. The first public exhibition of the sport took place at Emerald Hill in 1855, with the colony's first archery tournament staged in 1856. The sport's popularity declined at the end of the century, but a revival of interest occurred after World War I. The Moorabbin Archery Club (established in 1946 as the Victorian Archery Club) is the oldest existing archery club in Victoria, and 11 metropolitan target archery clubs are now affiliated with Archery Victoria Incorporated.
