Banana Alley

The railway viaduct in Flinders Street between Elizabeth and Market streets was designed by William Henry Greene, chief engineer of the Victorian Railways, and built in 1891-92 to link Spencer and Flinders Street stations. In 1984 the State Government committed $1 million to refurbishment of the vaulted stores beneath the railway line, but a short-lived Victorian Wine Industry Association venture to establish their headquarters and a wine museum in Banana Alley had closed by 1989. Early tenants including fruiterers associated with the nearby Western Market gave the vaults their colloquial name.
