Banyule City

This inner north-eastern municipality was created in 1994 by merging the City of Heidelberg (save the Mont Park- Bundoora Health precinct) with sections of the shires of Eltham (Montmorency and Lower Plenty) and Diamond Valley (Greensborough, Watsonia, Bundoora). Thought to be an Aboriginal word for hill, the name was originally given to the 1848 homestead built by early settler Joseph Hawdon.
