Beenak

(3139, 58 km E, Yarra Ranges Shire)

Situated north-east of Gembrook and 20 km from Launching Place, the rural locality of Beenak is thought to take its name from an Aboriginal word for hand-basket. The timbered ranges around Mount Beenak (744 m) supported a sawmilling industry whose traces include Russell's Tomahawk Creek Tramway (1922). A kiln at nearby Kurth Kiln Park manufactured charcoal for producer gas as a petrol substitute during World War II rationing.
