Brownlow Medal

The annual Australian Rules Football award presented on the Monday night before the Grand Final in September for the player or players judged by the field umpires to have been the fairest and best for the season is known as the Brownlow Medal. Charles Brownlow (1861-1924) was a player, captain, coach and club secretary of the Geelong Football Club, and later chairman of the Umpires and Permits Committee and vice-president of the Victorian Football League. The inaugural medal was won by Geelong's Edward 'Carji' Greeves in 1924.
