A contemporary 'alternative' opera company formed in Melbourne in 1988 with Douglas Horton as its artistic director, Chamber Made Opera has made considerable impact with the quality and daring of its productions. These combine the musical and dramatic formality of opera with a challenging inventiveness of style, narrative and theme. Its intriguing repertoire and young performers have brought a new audience to opera who are prepared to attend non-conventional venues and enjoy the eclecticism of a company open to many musical and dramatic influences. It has consistently won praise and respect for its unique blend of highly disciplined work with surprising experimentation.
