Gardenvale

(3185, 10 km SE, Glen Eira City)

A residential pocket of the former City of Caulfield, between Elsternwick and North Brighton, in the 19th century Gardenvale was mostly devoted to market gardens. In 1883 the Catholic Presentation Sisters opened Star of the Sea College in the locality, then known as Elsternwick. In the first decade of the 20th century Gardenvale was rapidly subdivided into suburban estates like the Garden Vale estate on what had been known as Lempriere's Paddock. The Gardenvale railway station opened in 1906 on the Sandringham line.
