Gardiner

(3146, 9 km SE, Stonnington City)

This locality derives its name from John Gardiner who overlanded cattle from New South Wales in 1837 and established a cattle station beside Gardiners Creek. His name was used to describe the local district until 1878 when it was changed to the Shire of Malvern. Now Gardiner applies only to a small pocket of Malvern and a railway station on the Glen Waverley line. Despite the fact that the line as far as Gardiner opened (as the Glen Iris line) in 1890, it was not until the 1920s that suburban home-buyers began to settle and build in the area.
