This inner-southern municipality was created in 1994 by the amalgamation of the City of Caulfield and part of the former City of Moorabbin. The name Glen Eira is thought to have been first used by a district surveyor on a plan of allotments at Caulfield in 1856. Pioneer pastoralist Henry Ricketson built Glen Eira mansion as a town house on Kooyong Road. The mansion was used as a military hospital during World War I and later as living quarters for nurses. It was demolished in 1964.
