This residential area on the Princes Highway experienced significant population growth from the 1980s, with a high proportion of its workforce employed in manufacturing. Until 1923 Hallam was known as Hallam's Road, after the family who owned the first local store. A soldier settlement in the area in the 1920s and 1930s failed.
