Kooyong

(3144, 6 km SE, Stonnington City)

Kooyong is a small residential district best known as the site of the Lawn Tennis Association of Victoria's stadium and headquarters, established there in 1920. Kooyongkoot meaning 'resting place' or 'haunt of the wild fowl', was the Aboriginal name for Gardiners Creek. George Stevenson's large mansion and estate, Glenferrie, dominated the area at the end of the 19th century. Chinese market gardeners worked here until the 1930s but Kooyong was gradually subdivided between 1900 and the 1930s and became an enclave of substantial, often architect-designed houses.
