Martial Arts

The first ju-jitsu demonstration to be held in Australia took place in Sydney in 1906, whereupon clubs were also formed in other States. National men's championships began in 1950, and the Judo Federation of Victoria was established in 1952. Women participated in national events from 1956. Increased immigration from non-British countries following World War II, and a general dissatisfaction with Western consumerism, encouraged people to search for alternative lifestyles and philosophies and led to the popularity of other martial art forms such as taekwondo, aikido and goju karate in Melbourne from the 1970s.
