Mount Evelyn

(3796, 37 km E, Yarra Ranges Shire)

A suburb of varied land uses lying between Lilydale and Silvan, Mount Evelyn was named after Evelyn Heales, daughter of Richard Heales, Victorian Premier (1860-61). Until 1934 a tramway from Lilydale to Mount Evelyn transported timber for the furnaces at David Mitchell's quarry. The former railway from Lilydale to Warburton (1901) passed through the town, and is now part of the Warburton Trail. Mount Evelyn has a central residential core, the northern and eastern portions remaining agricultural, and features the Mount Evelyn Forest.
