A major industrial suburb in Melbourne's west, bordering Altona North and Williamstown North, Newport features the Newport Power Station by the entrance to the Yarra River, BP and Shell fuel depots, and a campus of Victoria University. At the junction between the railway lines from Werribee and Williamstown, the suburb was home from 1882 to the Newport Railway Workshops, a major local employer until closed in 1992.
