Niddrie

(3042, 9 km NW, Moonee Valley City)

This small residential suburb and former farming area of Keilor is located south-west of Essendon Airport, east of Steeles Creek. The origin of the name is unclear. The Earl of Hopetoun, Governor of Victoria 1889-95, came from Niddry Castle in Scotland, though an earlier bluestone house in east Keilor had been called Niddrie after an Edinburgh suburb. Residential development began after World War II, with recipients of war service home loans and eastern European migrants among those who built homes here. In the 1960s local industries expanded to include engineering, tool-making, and the manufacture of furniture, chemicals and specialised aircraft equipment.
