Old Colonists Association

Founded as a benevolent organisation for the elderly in 1869 by George Coppin, popular actor, theatrical entrepreneur, land developer, politician and philanthropist, the Association established an aged care village at Rushall, near Merri Creek in North Fitzroy, in 1870. Today the village includes a range of historic housing, including colonial bluestone and federation cottages, and one designed by Walter Burley Griffin. The Association has continued to expand its range of services, including the opening in 1999 of a specialist care unit in North Eltham for sufferers of dementia.
