Pram Factory

The Australian Performing Group (APG), a collective of theatre workers, moved its headquarters in 1970 from La Mama Theatre into new premises featuring a 150-seat theatre converted from former livery stables and the Paramount pram factory in Drummond Street, Carlton. In 1973 a second 75-seat theatre was opened at the back. Between 1970 and 1981, when it was sold and demolished, it was the site of meetings, group-devised productions, set-building, rehearsals, protest meetings and performances, where unconventional physical intimacy between actors and audience contributed to the 'rough theatre' style characteristic of the 'New Wave' of Australian drama.
