Ripponlea

(3185, 7 km SE, Port Phillip City)

A part of St Kilda between Balaclava and Elsternwick, Ripponlea took its name from the local railway station, itself named after merchant and parliamentarian Frederick Sargood's mansion, called Rippon Lea after his mother, Emma Rippon. The mansion's superb gardens and grounds were subdivided to create the eponymous suburb after Sargood's death in 1903. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation opened its Melbourne television studios at Ripponlea in 1954.
