St Kilda Film Festival

Founded in 1984 by Mary Lou Jelbart, a St Kilda city councillor, this festival fast developed from a suburban cultural initiative into the major curated Australian short-film festival, under the committed management (1986-90) of veteran local film teacher and film-maker Nigel Buesst. It has consolidated its position under the management (1999-2004) of local film broadcaster and journalist Paul Harris. Originally held over several days in autumn at the National Theatre, it later moved into the George Cinema, but holds a popular festive opening night at the vast Astor Theatre. Sponsored by the St Kilda City Council (now Port Phillip City), the Australian Film Commission and Film Victoria, it is also strongly supported by members of the film industry who endow many of its awards.
