Located on the Plenty River between Mill Park to the south and Mernda to the north, South Morang is a fast growing suburb in the Plenty growth corridor. It contains some agricultural areas in the north, the South Morang terminal station, and the former City of Whittlesea municipal offices and civic centre. Hawkstowe Park on the Plenty River includes the 19th-century homestead of the Le Page family. The suburb's name possibly derives from an Aboriginal word meaning 'cloudy or sky'.
