Strathmore

(3041, 11 km NW, Moonee Valley City)

Thomas Napier, who came from the valley of Strathmore in Scotland, purchased a substantial estate to the north of Essendon in the 1840s. When the local Progress Association requested a change of name for the area in the 1940s, Strathmore was chosen. The substantial houses that brewer Alex McCracken built in the 1880s and 1890s are still standing, but the subdivision of estates for suburban housing did not begin until the 1920s. More rapid residential development occurred in the 1950s. Bordering the south and eastern edges of Essendon Airport, Strathmore was bisected by the construction of the Tullamarine Freeway in the 1960s.
