Tyabb

(3913, 52 km S, Mornington Peninsula Shire)

Tyabb is a rural-residential suburb on the western side of Westernport Bay. Its name is an approximation of an Aboriginal word for 'mudholes' or 'waterholes' and may have been the name used by Boon wurrung people for the waterholes at which they camped in this district. A township called Tyabb was gazetted as part of the Parish of Tyabb in 1861, but it was not here, but at a site further north, that a village developed at the centre of a flourishing orchard and nursery district in the second half of the 19th century.
