Victorian Aboriginal Legal Aid Service

One of several such services based on a model developed in Sydney, the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Aid Service was founded by Jim and Margaret Berg and Stewart Murray in 1973. Community-controlled and federally funded, it replaced an informal service that had been operated by the Victorian Aborigines Advancement League since 1968. From its offices in Fitzroy the legal service represents Koories before the courts, undertakes research and community education and advocates for law reform. It was also instrumental in the establishment in 2003 of the Koorie Court in Broadmeadows.
