Dean Alley is a dead-end lane located between Swanston and Russell streets, extending south from Little Bourke Street. In 1860, Dean Alley was home to a sawmill run by J.B. Morris. A Chinese lodging house was also located here. In 1895, the southern end of the lane abutted both the back of the renowned French restaurant Parer's Crystal Café, located at 198-200 Bourke Street, and the Waxworks, located at 202-204 Bourke Street.
