Multicultural Centre for Women's Health

In 1978 a public forum was held in Melbourne to discuss health issues related to migrant women and family planning. The result was Action for Family Planning, a multilingual program that brought family planning to migrant women in their workplaces. Lunchtime sessions by volunteer educators introduced contraceptive and family planning information, often for the first time, to thousands of migrant women. Action for Family Planning changed its name over the years to reflect an expansion of health services for women and is now the Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health. With information and assistance in nineteen languages, it is still the only multilingual program in Australia that takes women’s health education into the workplace.
