Jane Bell Lane

Jane Bell Lane was built in 2002-3 as part of the Queen Victoria shopping complex between Swanston, Lonsdale, Little Lonsdale and Russell streets in the city centre. It leads west from Russell Street towards QV Square and connects to Swanston Street via Red Cape Lane. It was named for Jane Bell, the matron of Royal Melbourne Hospital from 1910-1934 who revolutionised nursing techniques and nurses' status throughout the state. The creation of new lanes such as those in QV represents a contemporary trend in corporate retail development.
