Coming from as many as 50 different countries, the bulk of Armenian immigrants to settle in Melbourne arrived after World War II. The 1996 census listed only 770 Armenians under 'Birthplace', with 9920 recorded under 'Language Spoken (Armenian)'. The largest concentration lives in the Greater Dandenong, Monash and Knox regions where they have established Armenian Apostolic and Catholic churches, a relief society and weekend language schools. A monthly newspaper, Armenia, circulates widely within the community, and there are regular Armenian programs on ethnic radio.
