Bangholme

(3175, 30 km SE, Greater Dandenong City)

This mainly agricultural district lies between Chelsea and Keysborough on the former Carrum Swamp, 8 km from Dandenong. Bangholme (variously spelt Bigning, Baungan, Barnham, Bangano) took its name from a waterhole on Joseph Hawdon's early pastoral run, and derives from an Aboriginal word thought to mean 'hut'. A National Water-sports Centre is situated in Bangholme's southern portion on the Patterson River, which as the Patterson Cut restricted the swamp water supply and reduced the natural habitat area now confined to the Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands. Bangholme also features a Melbourne water treatment plant, Seventh-Day Adventist school, and the Bunurong Memorial Park.
