Buttlejorrk

The Parish of Buttlejorrk, between Melton and Sunbury in the County of Bourke, was named in 1839 by surveyor William Darke, using an adaptation of Aboriginal words. Pastoralists such as George Evans and John Aitken were located in the district in the late 1830s, though most of the parish was later covered by W.J.T. Clarke's Special Survey. A village on the banks of the Kororoit Creek was known for a time as Aitken's Gap, but by the 1890s was more generally known as Buttlejorrk.
