Cardinia Shire

An outer eastern, semi-rural shire created in 1994, Cardinia includes the former Shire of Pakenham and parts of the former Shires of Sherbrooke (Emerald, Cockatoo, Clematis, Avonsleigh) and Cranbourne (Koo Wee Rup, part of Lang Lang). An early squatting run, taken up near Cranbourne in 1838, was named Cardinia. It is thought that the name was derived from an Aboriginal word, Karr-din-yarr, meaning looking towards the sun, or sunrise. One of Melbourne's major water reservoirs, Cardinia Reservoir, is located within the shire.
