Cottles Bridge

(3099, 30 km NE, Nillumbik Shire)

Cottles Bridge is a rural area in Hurstbridge, once an orchard district but now better characterised as the site of hobby farms and executive family retreats. It is named for a crossing place over the Diamond Creek giving access to the rural hinterland of Arthurs Creek towards Kinglake. Since the 1950s painters and other artists were drawn to sketching grounds in the area, notably Clifton Pugh (1924-90), who later bequeathed his home Dunmoochin with 2.5 ha of bush to public ownership.
