Garden City

(3207, 5 km SW, Port Phillip City)

Formerly known as Sandridge Flat, Garden City is a residential area west of Port Melbourne, largely developed during the 1930s as a garden suburb, in response to growing demand for low-cost, low-density workers' housing. Construction was initially conducted by the State Savings Bank and later overseen by the Housing Commission. The provision of services differed and relationships were sometimes strained between bank estate owners and Commission tenants. The 1990s Beacon Cove development on the foreshore contrasts strongly in terms of both housing style and demographic composition.
