Hoppers Crossing

(3029, 24 km W, Wyndham City)

This residential area north-east of Werribee began to develop in the mid-1960s when a local farmer and businessman began subdividing his land for housing estates. The name probably derives from a Princes Highway road crossing, in turn named after Hoppers Hill, an early topographical feature. Within 20 years Hoppers Crossing had become one of Melbourne's fastest growing suburbs, boasting 8000 residents, a number of schools, kindergartens and other community facilities, set among a sea of brick veneer houses.
