Hughesdale

(3166, 14 km SE, Monash City)

Hughesdale is a residential suburb situated between the Princes Highway, Poath, Warrigal and North roads, and neighbouring Murrumbeena, Malvern East, Oakleigh and Bentleigh East. Hughesdale railway station opened in 1925 and was reportedly named after Oakleigh mayor James Hughes, who had been instrumental in obtaining the station for the area. Much of Hughesdale's residential development took place between the 1930s and 1950s. A small commercial strip in Poath Road, near the railway station, is the hub of Hughesdale. Its proximity to the continually expanding Chadstone Shopping Centre is the major feature of the area.
