Little Sisters of the Poor

This Catholic religious order of French origin was invited to Melbourne by Archbishop Goold in 1883. Establishing themselves in premises prepared for them in Collingwood by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, the founding party began their aged care work, moving in 1885 to Northcote where, over time, they constructed a substantial institution. A faith charity, the sisters frequented Melbourne markets seeking donations towards their work, which grew as local postulants were attracted to the order. Although the large institution has now closed, the order continues to work in aged care in the inner-northern suburbs.
