Andrew McCrae leased the Arthur's Seat pastoral station from 1844 to 1853, and, with his artist wife, Georgiana, built the homestead that still stands in Charles Street, McCrae. A wooden lighthouse built in 1874 (replaced later by the Eastern Shore lighthouse) and the offshore South Channel Pile Light guide navigation for shipping in Port Phillip Bay. Initially a small seaside resort surrounded by pastoral properties, in the late 20th century McCrae merged into the continuous stretch of permanent and holiday housing that lines the coast from Dromana to Rosebud.
