Northern Hospital

Opened in Epping in 1998, the Northern Hospital was part of the Kennett Liberal Government's plan to move public hospital beds to the outer suburbs and is now one of the city's busiest health facilities. It replaced the Preston and Northcote Community Hospital (PANCH) which had opened in 1958 after considerable campaigning and fundraising in the surrounding area. The affection in which PANCH was held in its local community resulted in widespread opposition to its closure. In 2003 health services returned to the Bell Street site with the opening by the Northern Health Network of PANCH Health Services.
