Commemorating Edwin Thomas Penny, a Moorabbin Shire councillor (1903-08), this name was given to a local post office branch in Bay Road in 1956 to avoid confusion with Highett and Cheltenham. While the name Pennydale has occasionally been used to refer to the adjacent locality, it has, since the 1950s, mostly been applied to the post office itself.
