Henry Foot surveyed the Pentridge village reserve 8 km north of Melbourne, adjoining Merri Creek and Sydney Road, and named it after the birthplace in Dorset of his wife, Lettice Spear. It was renamed Coburg in 1870, to avoid the stigma of the Pentridge Prison located there in 1850.
