This annual rally is held on the last Friday night in October to protest against violence towards women and children. Volunteers working with the Rape Crisis Centre organised Melbourne's first Reclaim the Night rally in 1979, based on similar protests in Europe and North America in the late 1970s. The rally is now co-ordinated by a non-profit collective, with involvement from the Centre Against Sexual Assault and other feminist groups. Attendance has varied from year to year, with as many as 7000 in 1994 and fewer than 500 in 1998.
