Regent

(3072, 3073, 11 km N, Darebin City)

Partly in Preston, partly in Reservoir, Regent is a small mainly residential locality astride Regent Street. Although there were residential subdivisions near the Regent railway station in the 1880s land boom, the area stayed mainly rural until the 1920s. Construction of the West Preston electric tramway, along Gilbert Road to Regent Street, in 1920 opened up the area to more intensive residential use. Local street names record World War I generals (including Monash, Birdwood, Haig and Pershing) and reflect the timing of Regent's main development. Rona Street records the name of one of the 1880s subdivisions.
