Rockbank

(3335, 27 km NW, Melton Shire)

Located on the Western Freeway between Deer Park and Melton, Rockbank was for over a century a small village servicing an agricultural and pastoral district. Rockbank pastoral estate, established by William Yuille, eventually passed to W.J.T. Clarke and became the largest estate in the Melton district. It was subdivided for closer settlement farms in the early 20th century. A limestone quarry operated here in the 1880s, and for a time Rockbank had its own chaff factory. As Melton emerged as a satellite city in the 1970s and 1980s, brick-veneer houses and paling fences also began to appear alongside the highway.
