Sandridge

Sandridge was the original name of Port Melbourne. First called Liardet's Beach, it was surveyed in 1849, the name bestowed by Superintendent La Trobe for the ridge of sand dunes along the foreshore. Sandridge became an important port to Melbourne, and the first Australian passenger railway ran from Melbourne to Sandridge in 1854. The name was changed to Port Melbourne in 1884.
