Singaporeans

The 1996 census records put the number of Singaporean-born immigrants in Melbourne at 5932, or approximately a third of total Singaporean Australians. Although the main ethnic groups in Singapore consist of Chinese (76%), Indians (6%) and Malaysians (5%), data on how these figures are reflected in Australia are lacking. Community leaders estimate, however, that there are as many Singaporean high-school and tertiary students on temporary visas as there are Singaporean permanent residents. As anticipated, these communities worship alongside other cultural communities who hold similar religious beliefs. Organised activities are mostly confined to the students associations and clubs, set up along ethnic lines or affiliated with larger Malaysian, Indian or Chinese associations. Aside from a handful of restaurants, the Merlion Club (1990) has brought the resident and student communities together.
